Imo State Commissioner for Health, Prosper Ohayagha-Success says Food safety has a critical role in ensuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain, from production to harvest, processing, storage, and distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption. Ohayagha-Success disclosed this during a media chat with Journalists in Owerri, to mark this year’s World Safety Day, with the theme, Food Standard saves lives, maintaining that this International Day is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food eaten is safe, which will in return reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. He added that the usual contaminants are microorganisms, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoan and other agents which can be organic or inorganic. World Food Safety Day, which is celebrated every 7th day of June, aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development.
