A UK court will today, hand sentence to a former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, following their conviction for organ trafficking in March. You will recall that Ekweremadu, Beatrice and Obeta were convicted of conspiracy to arrange the travel of a young Nigerian man who was identified as David Nwamini to Britain in order to exploit him for his kidney; needed for Ekweremadu’s sick daughter, Sonia. Conviction at the Old Bailey, London’s Central Criminal Court, is expected today, for a trial that has lasted for six weeks. They face a possible 10-year jail term for violating the Modern Slavery Act in a verdict that will be the first of its kind.
