Spain defeated Sweden in the first semifinal match to advance to the FIFA Women’s World Cup final co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Deep into the enthralling encounter, beginning from the 80th minute, three goals were scored, with Spain emerging 2-1 winners.
Olga Carmona scored the winner in the 89th minute at Eden Park in Auckland, sending the Spanish girls into Sunday’s final in Sydney against either the Lionesses of England, who are the European champions, or the Matildas of Australia, who have never before played at the semifinals of the tournament.
Although Sweden has been kicked out by Spain, it is not over for them.
They will play in the third-place match-up, facing the loser of Wednesday’s second semifinal clash between Australia and England. The third-place match will take place on Saturday in Brisbane.
